Parents play an essential role in preparing students for academic success.
Parents of learners at Scholarly Choice help provide added organization and structure, and promote continuity in the learning process. Parents also act as learning companions, advocates, and facilitators for their child. They help build and sustain a positive relationship with Scholarly Choice and work closely with the teacher/tutor/learning coach to ensure a successful learning experience.
Parents contribute to their child’s learning experience by being available as much as possible, showing an interest, asking questions, and communicating frequently with the teacher. Parents are a child's first teacher and coach and therefore may provide additional learning materials, explore concepts together, review and proofread assignments, read out loud, or simply express encouragement.
A strong partnership and excellent communication between parents, students and teachers, gives students confidence, sparks their desire to learn, and ensures a successful learning experience. Keeping the lines of communication strong also helps with recognizing and addressing individual learning challenges.
Student's Role
Scholary Choice acknowledges the specific role that students play in their own education
at each stage of child development. Instead of perceiving students as
passive members of the learning team, I understand the
benefits of encouraging children to become active members of that team,
along with their parents. Students’ educational
responsibility increases gradually as they progress through each grade
level . All scholars are held to a high standard of conduct and ethics. While each scholar has great freedom in the trajectory of their learning, each must remain open to people, ideas and experiences that may be entirely new. By maintaining this openness, each will be able to take advantage of the freedoms afforded, and chart the broadest possible intellectual journey.
Teacher/Tutor/Learning Coach's Role
In the elementary and middle school years, I work as a partner with parents to deliver an education experience that takes each student’s learning style into consideration. While the parent’s role is more vital and active in the early grades, I am available as a curriculum expert, and ensure that learners master the material through ongoing assessments. I foster collaboration and allow all learners to participate in small group learning activities. This includes content area discussions and providing students with the opportunity to share areas of individual interest. During the high school years, I help learners create an education plan designed to facilitate early entrance into college. I frequently communicate with the student to promote student success.
